Faith Church began in a season of growth and opportunity.
In the late 1940s, as Norwalk rapidly expanded, leaders within the Reformed Church recognized the need for a local congregation where families could gather around the Word of God and worship faithfully in their growing community. In the spring of 1949, families from the First Reformed Church of Artesia brought this vision to the Church Extension Committee of the Classis, and by the fall of that year, the work was underway.
The first worship service was held on November 6, 1949. Before there was a completed building, the church gathered wherever space allowed, trusting that God would provide what was needed in His time.
Land for the church was purchased for $19,593, a significant commitment for a young congregation. A modest chapel soon followed, built and furnished carefully and sacrificially. The emphasis was never on size or splendor, but on establishing a place where Christ would be preached and His people formed.
In 1949, Rev. Charles Dumville was called to serve as the church’s first ordained pastor. Under his leadership, the congregation was organized, the first Consistory meeting was held, and ministries such as Sunday School and Vacation Bible School were established. During those early years, the church constantly adapted to meet the needs of a growing community, sharing space, expanding schedules, and welcoming new families as Norwalk continued to develop.
From the beginning, Faith Church understood itself not as a project sustained by human effort alone, but as a work entrusted to the faithful care of God. Through seasons of growth and transition, different pastors and leaders have been called to serve, each for their time, each contributing to the life of the congregation.
Generations have gathered here to worship, to learn, to pray, to celebrate, and to grieve. The setting has changed, the faces have changed, but the calling has remained the same: to be a faithful witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ in this community.
We give thanks for those who have gone before us, not to dwell in the past, but to recognize the steady hand of God at work through many years. As Faith Church looks ahead, we do so with confidence, believing that the same Lord who established this congregation continues to lead it, and to write His story in and through our lives today.
We believe in one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God is eternal, sovereign, holy, and all-wise. He is the Creator of all things, perfect in every way, and worthy of our highest love, trust, and obedience. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14)
We believe in Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, fully God and fully man. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, lived a sinless life, died on the cross as a substitutionary atonement for sinners, rose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will return to judge the living and the dead. (John 1:1–14; Philippians 2:5–11; Colossians 1:15–20)
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Trinity, who convicts the world of sin, regenerates hearts, indwells all believers, empowers them for godly living, and gives spiritual gifts for the building up of the Church. (John 14:26; Romans 8:9–17; 1 Corinthians 12)
We believe the Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God, fully authoritative and sufficient in all matters of faith and life. All Scripture points to Jesus Christ and is useful for teaching, rebuke, correction, and training in righteousness. (2 Timothy 3:16–17; Luke 24:27; Hebrews 4:12)
We believe that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. It is not the result of human works or merit. God regenerates sinners by the Holy Spirit, granting them repentance and faith. Those who are truly saved will persevere to the end. (Ephesians 2:8–9; John 6:37–40; Romans 8:29–30)
We believe in the one, holy, universal Church composed of all who have been united to Christ by faith. This Church is expressed in local gatherings of believers who worship, pray, teach the Word, practice baptism and communion, make disciples, and love one another. (Acts 2:42–47; Ephesians 4:4–6; Matthew 28:19–20)
We believe that all who are truly in Christ are members of one spiritual family. We strive to walk in unity, charity, and truth, avoiding unnecessary division while holding firm to the essentials of the gospel. (John 17:20–23; Romans 14:1–19; Ephesians 4:1–6)
We believe the Church exists to glorify God by proclaiming the gospel and making disciples of all nations. Every believer is called to participate in this mission, empowered by the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:18–20; Acts 1:8; 2 Corinthians 5:18–20)
We believe Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly to establish His eternal kingdom. There will be a resurrection of the just and the unjust, the final judgment, and the renewal of all things. God’s people will dwell with Him forever. (John 5:28–29; Revelation 21:1–5; 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18)
